I took my first official gig photos at the beginning of this week for FasterLouder.com.au. Part of a series of gigs held under the Happy Mondays' moniker at Curtin House's summer-favourite Rooftop Bar, the gig was moved downstairs to The Toff in Town, resulting in better sound but harder photography conditions!

Neon Indian, a Texan band Wikipedia labels as 'psychedelic indie dance' were headlining in their last show as part of the Mind Control - Psychic Chasms Posessed tour with upcoming Sydney band Kyu supporting and as I'd been keen to see Neon Indian anyway, I was pretty excited when offered the chance to take photos of the gig.

As promised, here are some more photos from the 20th anniversary of the Meredith Music Festival. After a dramatic start to the weekend (tonsillitis and a car crash to name just a couple of issues), these photos were taken during the Saturday afternoon, which was one of my favourite parts of the festival. El Guincho's set was a highlight of that afternoon, which also happened to be the sunniest part of an otherwise cold, wet and windy weekend.

Merrydeath

The nickname 'Merrydeath', which refers to the Meredith Music Festival, is an apt one. The festival takes place over a weekend in December each year on a farm in country Victoria. It includes three days of camping and music for most of that time, day and night, except for a couple short hours of 'silence wedge' around dawn each morning. Having gone into the festival already run down thanks to a bout of tonsillitis I was glad I had the foresight to take today off work.

Some of these photos were taken in Echuca on Friday morning and the rest were taken at the festival on the weekend. These photos are just for starters as I'm waiting to get my other camera back from a friend.

On a musical note, El Guincho was the highlight for me. His tunes are so upbeat! I missed Neil Finn's entire set due to looking after my sick sister but apparently, and not surprisingly, he was incredible. I overheard a couple of girls in the toilet queue saying he was so good they cried.

Ring a Ring o' Roses

My ring collection has become a bit of an obsession. The newest addition is the silver square ring to the right in the photo below, bought while visiting the Camberwell Market yesterday.

The lady selling it (not to mention a bunch of other amazing rings - it was a good thing I only had a small amount of cash on me because I could easily have walked away with six or seven) told me they'd been sourced from a small town in Morocco. She also said they had spiritual qualities and though I like to take anything like that with a healthy amount of cynicism, it's a nice story. She told me one lady had purchased several rings from her and returned to the market not long after to report the rings had helped her find a boyfriend. Interesting theory!

One of my other favourites is the wolf ring I got from the Melbourne Design Market a few months ago.

Wilfred Jackal and The Shake Up at Miss Libertines' Purple Sneakers

One of my favourite Melbourne bands at the moment is Wilfred Jackal, having discovered them by accident one night at the Espy a few months ago. Last night they supported Sydney's The Shake Up at Miss Libertines' weekly Purple Sneakers indie night and I managed to convince my friend to come along with me to see them again. This was difficult because my history of introducing her to clubs is not great -- the mania that is After Dark Social Club at Roxanne Parlour isn't for everyone.

True to form Wilfred Jackal gave a great performance. The lead singer's voice is incredible and their songs are infectiously catchy. There's a certain smugness from getting to see them in such intimate gigs when they're clearly on the rise. Check 'em out here.

We hung around to check out The Shake Up and though we'd never heard of them we were both pretty impressed by their punk Clash-meets-Buzzcocks sound (listen here).

I'd been to Miss Libertines a couple of times before but it was better than I remembered. The venue is classy while being unpretentious and the music was like the best of everything on my iTunes remixed. Happy hour lasts until 10pm too!

Stonefields 'Through the Clover' EP Launch at The Espy

Last night I dropped into The Espy in St Kilda to see Triple J's Unearthed High winners, Stonefields, launching their EP Through the Clover. The four sisters that make up the band range in age from 19 down to an amazing 13 years and if this is how talented they are now, it's pretty safe to say they'll just keep getting better. I thought there was meant to be an awkward, gawky stage growing up but apparently these girls didn't get the memo. Highlights of the gig was a cover of Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love and the performance of their single (and the name of the EP) Through the Clover.

So I'm bringing Zoeluca back. It's been a crazy year and a bit since my last post.

To officially welcome the blog back here are some photos from a recent Foals gig in Melbourne followed by anamazing warehouse party put on by I Oh You and Spook magazine.

I had to get up at 5am to fly to New Zealand first thing the next morning, ripped part of the bumper off my car in the car park heading from the gig to the party and still remember this being an insanely good night so I'm hanging for the next one.

Exotic Summer

I had lots of fun attending the Forever New S/S 09/10 'Exotic Goddess' season launch at Spice Market last night.

I haven't got any photos of the parade but when I find some I'll post them. Think S/S 09 Gucci, Alexander Wang and Balmain collections though and you'll know where their 'inspiration' came from. Even their campaign shots are very similar to the Gucci campaign concept below:

There were some beautiful dresses that would be perfect for spring racing or weddings. There were lots of maxi dresses as well as short bodycon dresses for the brave. There was one stunning pale green floral maxi-dress for $199 I plan on trying on as soon as it's in store!

I met so many people and saw a few familiar faces. The bar itself is also worth a visit for anyone in Melbourne. The decor is like an Indian palace and although I didn't try the cocktails I've heard they are amazing. Apparently the 'Turkish Delight' cocktail tastes like the real thing. I can't wait to go back!

I have a grad job interview next week for the Government and I want to look professional without looking stiff. Veronika Maine is a gorgeous Australian brand (in the same stable as the more fashion-forward Cue) made from lovely fabrics and is one of the few remaining brands to be made in Australia. I went to David Jones on the weekend and picked up a long black skirt with a frilly folded detail along the hem and a blue and white pinstripe shirt with a frill down the front along the buttons. I also got a blazer to match the skirt but I'm taking that back to due my not having the job yet to pay it off (the blazer costs more than the skirt and shirt combined!).

I've compiled a selection of the pictures on their website, and although neither of the items I bought are pictured here, there are some very covetable pieces.

The campaign is beautiful too and isn't the model gorgeous? She's got a bit of Keira Knightley about her.

In times like these consumerism is a dirty word, so I was particularly proud of an outfit I put together a couple of weeks ago for a friends housewarming, another friend's birthday and another friend's farewell (going back to England after three years in Australia).

I know it's not the best photo and I apologise for that. The reason I was proud of it though, was because nothing in it was new. The newest part of it was the Tony Bianco shoes which I'd already worn out a few times and originally bought on sale (3 pairs for $100 = amazing deal). The skirt is Coo Coo Ca Choo (bought on sale 3 years ago), an old black singlet from Sportsgirl, a blue tank from Target and a black Spanish style fringed blazer I got from an op-shop last year (shoulder pads removed).

Ok, my shameless boasting about my recession proof styling ends here.

Style.com featured the Gryphon tank at left in their most recent newsletter. It's the perfect top to wear with black skinny jeans and boots to see a band... or to do whatever you want to do wearing it. It's that kind of top. I found some other photos of this brand I'd never heard of before on IntermixOnline. I don't know if they ship to Australia but seeing as I can't afford to buy clothes in Australia anyway it's fun to do a bit of window shopping from time to time.

Last night I went to a preview screening of a new film, Easy Virtue, starring Jessica Biel, Colin Firth, Kristen Scott-Thomas and Ben Barnes. The preview was hosted by Wittner for the VIP club and the film was fantastic. I can't remember enjoying a film so much in a long time. I've appreciated films, sure, but this really was pure enjoyment.

The script was hilarious, the film was very stylistic and the fashion was gorgeous (it is set in the 1920's after all).

Also, prior to showing us the film, a rep from Wittner showed us a couple of their new campaigns and said that every member of the VIP club will receive a pair of lace tights and socketts .Yay! I'm also loving those over-the-knee lace up boots. Might have to hope they go on sale though, I'm not in the position to spend over $450 on a pair of boots I'll probably wreck in six months.

I've no idea why I'm thinking about winter fashion when tomorrow is going to be 43 degrees celcius, but with the fashion world seemingly falling apart due to the recession, maybe I can use my bonus (thanks for that Kevin!) to buy this to-die-for Ksubi poncho (although to be honest, I doubt they'll need any help staying afloat when their label is so popular).

I was looking on The Age's website this morning and there were a couple of photo galleries with some pretty great celebrity fashion moments.

The first couple were taken at the premier of 'He's Just Not That Into You'. Jennifer Connelly wore a S/S 2009 Balmain and Drew Barrymore wore a stunning S/S 2009 Lanvin number that was perfect for her figure.

The second gallery was of the Allan Border Medal (something to do with cricket, I just looked at the dresses). Most of the dresses were fairly atrocious but Lara Bingle, model of the 'Where the bloody hell are you?' tourism ads, wore a S/S 2009 Prada dress and Resort 2009 Prada jewellery. She looked amazing!

So I'm back and blogging again (hooray!). Sorry for the long hiatus but now the year has well and truly begun I'm going to be more committed to this thing. You could call that my resolution I guess.

On the styling and production assisting front there isn't much news. I was put on hold for a couple of jobs over the next month but they've both been cancelled/postponed. Apparently they are fickle clients. Fashion week is coming up in March though so hopefully there will be a bit of news then!

My boy and I spent New Years down at a friend's holiday house on the beach. On our way back we stopped for breakfast, a walk on the beach and a play with my camera.

More Assisting

I got called out to assist on a location shoot for the December issue of Fashion Journal magazine on Friday. Fashion Journal is a free street press magazine circulated nationally, and aside from the people who actually work for the publishing company, everyone else (photographers, stylists, models included) works free.

It was freezing and rained for half the time we were there, but it was still so much fun. I felt sorry for the model who was wearing mostly breezy, floaty fabrics and didn't have the tiniest bit of fat on her to keep her warm. At one point I had to hold a feather coat around her legs while the photographer took a close-up of her face. He said it made her look warmer. It's funny the odd things you have to do as an assistant but it makes the day even more interesting.

The magazine doesn't go to print until next week but when I get it I'll scan the images in for you to see.

Fashion is Forever New

Last Wednesday I worked backstage at the Forever New Bourke St store launch party. It was a long day (9:45am - 9:30pm... I was exhausted!) but it was so much fun and I'm hoping I impressed enough to get asked to do more work soon.

Forever New is a recent addition to the Australian fashion market, and although a year or so ago I didn't think much of their stuff due to bad quality and generic designs, they've really lifted their game. The photos don't show it very well but so many of the pieces were gorgeous, well-made and had an accessible price - an important factor considering their target market can't afford to spend too much.

The night included a performance by Axle Whitehead (Australians might remember him as a past Australian Idol contestant and the disgraced Video Hits host) and a fashion parade, including a section featuring a couple of ballerinas in modified Forever New tutus. Some of the models were the same ones from the Gucci show the week before and another model, Natalia, modelled on my first photoshoot assisting stylist, Connel Chiang, at the beginning of the month.

Stylist, Pollyanna Kerdel, styled the show fantastically. There were a few party dresses where she had the models wear these really cool tiaras that weren't your typical silver and diamonte kind, but looked like some funky lattice cage propped on top of their heads. What's even more exciting is she gave me her card and said to contact her with my details in case she ever needs an extra assistant. Fingers crossed!

Art Deco Glamour

So called feminist, Germaine Greer, has come out critisizing Michelle Obama and her daughter's election night dresses.

FEMINIST Germaine Greer says the dress Michelle Obama wore to her husband's US election declaration was a "butcher's apron" and looked like a "geometrical hemorrhage".

In her regular column for The Guardian, Greer described the outfit as: "All black with an eye-burning red panel that splattered itself down the front like a geometrical haemorrhage."

It was "a poster in the most disturbing colours known to man, the colours of chaos. Coral snakes and venomous spiders signal their destructive potential by the display of similarly violent contrasts", she wrote.

Greer referred to online critics of the dress to back up her argument, and said that if Michelle had dressed herself for defeat, she could not have chose better outfits.

She also criticised the clothes worn by her daughters. Sasha, 7, wore black, and Malia, 10, wore black.

"Any colour is better than pink, but these robust choices hardly strike one as girly."

Bloggers reacted with amazement to the column by the author of the landmark feminist work The Female Eunuch, with one declaring it the end of feminism.

As a strong believer in women's rights, I find this completely hypocritical on Greer's part. Isn't the point of feminism to push the idea that women shouldn't be confined to what society defines them as? Without this becoming a bit "ra ra ra," we should be able to wear what we want, when we want, and not have people make character assassinations based purely on these things.

Michelle Obama is a relatively young wife of a relatively young American Presidant; a factor the campaign was largely based on. As such she shouldn't be restricted to the boxy pastle skirt-suits of recent years. Besides, red looks amazing on her.

Gucci Cruise

On Thursday I worked as a dresser at the Melbourne launch of Gucci's latest cruise collection.

It was held in a temporary structure at Federation Square and while it was a long day, I had so much fun!

I feel like I'm actually starting to make some progress in the industry, as far as getting to know the various people working in it anyway. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next. I'm not sure if I've mentioned in this blog that I've started assisting a stylist, but we're doing a TV commercial week after next. I'm so excited!

Seeing Spots

I'm back!

I finished uni last week and I'm now free to post, guilt-free, as much as I like!

I also just got my first credit card (not so sure that's a good thing) so I'm sure I'll be spending even more time perusing online shopping sites looking for things I can potentially buy.

Doing just that, I remembered a Topshop dress I'd seen on sale (it's not available on their website anymore, but these others are, and I'm sure some will pop up on ebay sooner or later). Spots are spots, they're nothing new, but for House of Holland fans it's a way to look like you've stepped into their most recent Spring/Summer collection before it's even hit the shop floors. We don't really celebrate Halloween in Australia but for those that do, just add some florals and bright sunglasses to go as Agyness Deyn.

It feels like it goes against the fashion code to 'not get Chanel'.. I hate to say it but I never really did. Not in recent seasons anyway. It seemed dowdy, and not hugely relevant (aside from a few haute couture gowns here and there). Maybe it just wasn't my style but it always felt like if I really loved fashion then it should have been.

Last week's show in Paris changed my mind though, there are some pieces I've fallen in love with and I'm wishing I had the kind of salary to afford them. They're timeless, sophisticated, and they're relevant for all ages.

It's not often a collection that comes out where you'd wear every single piece but for me, this is it. Meanwhile, I found the Vivienne Westwood Red Label collection to be a little disappointing. There was some cool stuff but nothing amazing.. It was interesting to see her recruitment of English 'it-girls' Alexa Chung and Daisy Lowe as models, though.

Edit: Speaking of Daisy Lowe, here's a photo of her on her way to Henry Holland's (of House of Holland fame) after show party. I'm usually all for her fashion sense but she was fairly game going out in public in this outfit.... a leopard print leotard?.. Really, Daisy?

Spring Shoes

The first lot of the shows have finished in New York so I thought I'd do a round up of the styles from the shows (I could only use the ones on Style.com in the details section so obviously there are amazing styles I couldn't include).

Chunky and sculptural is still in and possibly even more exaggerated in some cases. Marc Jacobs showed quirky cool styles (as usual). I was very keen to see the shoes Rodarte used as their spike heels (I think they were done by Louboutin?...) have received so much coverage since their last show.

3.1 Phillip Lim, Doo.Ri and Michael Kors were my faourites though.

Invest in a jumpsuit

One of the major trends I noticed in the New York shows last week (and some of the London ones that have already happened) was that jumpsuits, rompers, onesies, playsuits or whatever you want to call them were VERY popular with designers. They came out in a huge variety of styles, whether slouchy or structured, short or long, cute or sophisticated, there seems to be a jumpsuit for everybody.

If New York Fashion Week is anything to go by, Shanina Shaik from Make Me A Supermodel doesn't have anything to worry about when it comes to her exotic looks. I found this lookalike while browsing the shots from Dennis Basso's show on Style.com today.

This is Sana Soegaard Belal, in this shot at least the resemblance is uncanny!

The Alice Dellal Effect

Alice Dellal is one of the big society "it-girls" at the moment and her influence showed in the styling of hair and make-up at yesterday's Proenza Schouler show in New York. Almost every model sported Dellal's trademark side-do (bar the shaved head) and bare face with red lipstick. The clothes weren't bad either.

I am LOVING the new BCBG Max Azria collection, it's very sexy and sophisticated.

Also, Erin Fetherston's new range is cute with it's pastel bubble theme but a couple of the dresses remind me of Camilla & Marc's latest collection, only Erin Fetherston's version is a bit more extreme.

New purchases and Melbourne Spring Fashion Week

I didn't end up finding that bow (although I still want one if anyone knows where to get one.. I might just buy a hair band with a big bow and rip the bow off to stick on a clip) to wear with my new dress, but I did treat myself so some birthday gifts at the new Sportsgirl flagship sto re on Bourke St yesterday.

Here's what I bought:

I plan on wearing my hair in a messy bun with the hair band and earrings. Sportsgirl have a really pretty make-up collection out at the moment too and it's pretty cheap. The eyeshadow quads are around $12 each I think. The dress is pretty dramatic so I thought I'd keep it fairly simple. I'm also going to wear a plain gold bangle that I got for my 21st last year and these chunky heels from Wittner:

I bought mine a year ago but they've re-released them for this summer. They're $149.95, come in three colours and they're really comfortable for such a high heel.

In other news it's Melbourne Spring Fashion Week this week. Has anyone been to any of the parades?

Hair Bows and Copy Cats

I love the bow in this Cassette Society ad. I want to pair it with the Marnie Skillings dress I bought last week. Does anyone know where I can get one or something like it? I don't want a hair band, just a clip that will sit at the front of the hair line.

Also, these maxi-dresses seem to have had the same inspiration source.... Jeans West's version is on the left and Barkins' is on the right. It's a pretty dress, it would be great for summer barbecues with some metallic sandals.
